WILDERNESS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Dennis McKane, present Chair, X-C Skiing/Snowshoeing and Charlie Phy, past Backpacking Chair from the 80’s, both longtime members and leaders for the OCSJ are now Leaders for Wilderness Volunteers (WV) out of Flagstaff, Arizona.  They both started volunteering together with WV in 2007 and became Leaders in 2011.

Wilderness Volunteers is a 501©(3) nonprofit organization created in 1997 to organize and promote volunteer service to America’s wild lands. They work with public land agencies including the National Park Service, the Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management and the US Fish and Wildlife Service in the lower 48, Alaska and Hawaii.

WV season typically runs from March through October. WV offers a selection of trips with a variety of service projects; all trips cost $299. All food including snacks is provided. WV does not charge the agencies for their work, but they supply tools and supervision for the projects. Participants provide their own camping gear, transportation, a sense of adventure, and a willingness to contribute time and energy to worthy projects.  All trips are led by volunteer leaders, are one week long and are limited to 12 or fewer participants.
